Each deck is different and we will look at the material, condition and how dirty it is to determine the right method to use.

Remove dirt, algae & moss from your decking

Bristol’s damp weather and frequent periods of rain encourage the growth of algae, moss and other organic build-up on decking, particularly in shaded areas, grooves or places where the surface takes longer to dry.

Over time, this build-up can form a green, slippery film that becomes more noticeable when the decking is wet. To help slow down the rapid return of these deposits, we can also apply a maintenance treatment after cleaning.

Protective treatment after cleaning

To keep your decking cleaner for longer, we offer an optional maintenance treatment applied right after the clean.

1

Deep clean: algae, moss and biofilm removed

2

Surface dried and inspected

3

Treatment applied to slow regrowth

The right cleaning method for your decking

Depending on what the surface needs, we can use different cleaning methods individually or combine them:

Pre-treatment

Solutions that help loosen build-up before cleaning.

Controlled pressure washing

The pressure is adjusted to clean the surface without being too harsh on it.

Low-pressure cleaning

A gentler option for surfaces that need extra care.

Steam cleaning

For certain surfaces or stubborn build-up, using high temperatures and lower pressure

Manual brushing

For grooves, edges and hard-to-reach areas.

Protecting your decking after cleaning

After cleaning, the right treatment can help keep your decking looking its best for longer. Depending on the material and condition of the surface, we’ll recommend the most suitable option:

01

Wood revitalising treatment

Helps refresh the natural colour after a deep clean.

02

Decking oils

Enhance the wood grain, help repel water and make maintenance easier.

03

Sealants or stains

Provide protection from sunlight and offer a choice of different shades.

04

Anti-slip additives

Help improve grip when the decking is wet.

We use professional-grade products, applied in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. And if your decking doesn’t need sealing, as is the case with some composite surfaces, we’ll let you know.

    Decking cleaning FAQs

Yes, but you need to be careful with the pressure, particularly on wooden decking. Too much pressure can raise the wood fibres, cause splintering or leave permanent marks on the surface. A lower pressure setting, a wide spray nozzle and keeping a safe distance from the surface are recommended.

It depends on the material and condition of the decking. For wood, applying a suitable cleaning solution beforehand can help loosen dirt and build-up, reducing the need for high pressure. In many cases, the two methods can be combined: the surface is treated first, then cleaned and rinsed using controlled pressure.

Decking generally takes around 24–48 hours to dry completely. In cool or damp weather, or if the decking is heavily shaded, it may take 48–72 hours or even longer. The surface needs to be completely dry before applying oil, sealant or other treatments.

It is best to avoid excessive pressure, hard wire brushes and harsh chemical solvents, as these can damage wood fibres, finishes or composite surfaces. Chlorine-based products are not suitable in every situation either, so the cleaning solution should always be chosen according to the material.

The pressure should be kept at a suitable level for the surface, using a wide spray pattern and maintaining enough distance from the wood. The jet should be kept moving rather than held in one place and, on wooden decking, cleaning should follow the direction of the grain. The type and condition of the wood should also be taken into account before cleaning.

For most decking, professional cleaning once a year is usually enough. Decking in damp, heavily shaded areas or close to trees may need cleaning more frequently, as algae, moss and other build-up tend to return more quickly.
